IRC Programs

The program list below is by no means comprehensive but it provides links to stable programs for the beginner (AthenaIRC) and for power users (Ircle and Snak).

Ircle

Ircle has been around for many years and is a full featured irc program suitable for the irc veteran who wants all the irc capabilities and then some. It's been a long term favourite of #macintosh users and is throughly recommended. Ircle is trialware i.e. it has a 30 day trial period that requires you to register it if you wish to continue using it. The 68k version is for pre-PPC Macs, the Classic version is for PPC Macs running MacOS 7.5 - 9.2.1 and the Carbon version is for OS X users.

Although Snak hasn't been around as long as Ircle, it is another "industrial strength" irc program that has gained in popularity over the years. It is also a recommended program and is available for both MacOS and OS X. Snax is also trialware i.e. it has a 30 day trial period that requires you to register it if you wish to continue using it. Snax will only run on MacOS 9.x or greater is fully OS X compatible. Under MacOS 9.x you will also need to make sure you have CarbonLib 1.5 or later in your extensions folder.

For Snak's home page just click on the Snak icon on the left.

Faces

The face file is a legacy from the legendary Homer irc program for the Macintosh that has been continued by Onno (the Ircle developer) for Ircle users. A user can have a "face" that other irc users can view and Onno has also extended it by enabling the inclusion of a much larger image such as a scan of a photo. After downloading the face file make sure you view the Read Me file on how to install the Face file. To learn how to make your own face click here.
